Pleasure to meet you! … Tell me about yourself?

It’s the equivalent to a first impression amplified by ten; one statement, subject to endless perception, variables in personality types, intentional or unintentional connotations or associations, and stereotypes. The entire purpose of the statement is aimed at being scrutinized. Utilizing that objective, researching all the multifaceted possible angles, and taking the initiative to construct the best possible T.M.A.Y. or Elevator Pitch, can really be the make it or break it to any professional relationship.

So what is a “T.M.A.Y.” or an Elevator Pitch? And why is it so important?

T.M.A.Y. is an anagram for one of the most crucial and common interview questions, “Tell me about yourself?” This is often the first question you’ll be asked in an interview. It serves as an introduction that is aimed at providing the interviewer an idea of who you are. T.M.A.Y. is similar to the “Elevator Pitch”, which is often a professional encounter that is less formal and less anticipated. The main difference between these two concepts is the anticipation or preparation period. However, if you work in the competitive and ever changing professional business world, being well prepared this type of question or encounter is essential. This type of inquiry happens in various professional contexts and should generally be no longer than 2-3 minutes.

The TMAY/Elevator Pitch is basically a clear and concise synopsis that explains your professional interests or objectives and your relative experience in a way that illustrates a clear connection between your objectives and your experience. The TMAY/Elevator Pitch should also have two critical factors in order to be effective; it must be perceived as positive and memorable, and it must initiate further conversation. Both of these factors encompass one concept: Leave them wanting more.

2-3 minutes doesn’t seem like a very long time, to adequately sell yourself to potential employers, colleagues, or connections.
